Floating market Damnoens Saduak

Damnoens Saduak is the name of the canal dug in the reign of Rama Iv to connect the Taachin river with the Maklong river. The area is flat and around this main canal there is a complex network of smaller canals to irrigate the area. The people have been living along this network, with the house directly on the canals, everyone with his own boat outside the door.

In the past the use of the canals as connection system has been more efficient and stable than the roads, if any, built on an easily flooded area. Hence the development of a trading and as a result a floating market. Nowadays the roads are more efficient and safe from floods. All the area has a well developed road system and the floating market has lost its importance. The definitive hit to transform it came from the tourism.

Visit the market can be very disappointing if you are looking for something authentic. It’s totaly tourism oriented. I was expecting that and the reasons, because I went there, were to try to catch the life of the people in the area, find out why and how in that area there was a floating market. I wanted also see how the boats move in the tiny crowed canals. There are too many tourist in Thailand it couldn’t be possible to find an authentic market.

To find my, not complicated, answers, after a tour by boat we went to the market walking. To see the same place from different prospects. We went along the canals by the houses. It’s easy to understand that the life now is more on the normal roads. We could see the pedestrian path built along the canals and in the water, the bridges to cross the canals and the complex system of water pipes.
